How to Start a Business While Doing a Full-Time Job in India

Hi All

Starting a business while working a full-time job can be an excellent way to build an additional source of income without immediately giving up financial stability. In India, the growth of digital platforms, freelancing, e-commerce and online services has made it easier than ever to start a business with limited investment. However, success requires careful planning, time management and a gradual approach.

1. Choose the Right Business Idea

Start with a business that matches your skills, experience and interests. Some options that can be started alongside a job include online training, freelancing, digital marketing, content creation, consulting, affiliate marketing, travel services and e-commerce.

Ideally, choose a business that does not require you to be physically present throughout the day. A service-based or digital business can be particularly suitable because it can often be operated during evenings, weekends or holidays.

2. Check Your Employment Contract

Before starting, carefully review your company's employment agreement and HR policies. Some employers have restrictions relating to moonlighting, outside employment, competing businesses or use of company resources.

Avoid using your employer's laptop, data, contacts, confidential information or working hours for your business. Keeping your employment and business activities separate can help prevent potential conflicts.

3. Start Small and Test the Market

You don't need a large investment to begin. Start with a minimum viable version of your business and test whether customers are willing to pay for your product or service.

For example, if you want to start an online training business, you could initially offer a small workshop instead of investing immediately in a large training platform. Similarly, a freelancer can begin with one or two clients before building a larger team.

The objective at this stage is to validate the idea rather than maximize profits.

4. Create a Realistic Time Schedule

A full-time job already consumes a significant portion of your day, so time management is essential. Allocate specific hours to your business rather than trying to work whenever you find free time.

For example, you could spend one hour on weekdays and several hours on weekends developing your business. Automating repetitive tasks and outsourcing activities such as graphic design, video editing or bookkeeping can also save valuable time.

5. Keep Your Finances Separate

Maintain separate records for your salary income and business income and expenses. Open a separate bank account for the business when appropriate and maintain proper invoices, receipts and expense records.

As your business grows, understand your applicable tax, registration and compliance requirements. Depending on the nature and scale of the business, you may need professional advice from a chartered accountant or other qualified professional.

6. Build Before You Quit your Job

One of the biggest advantages of starting a business while employed is that your salary can provide financial stability while you develop the business.

Instead of quitting your job immediately, focus on building customers, recurring revenue and reliable business processes. You can consider moving to full-time entrepreneurship only after carefully evaluating your financial situation, business performance and personal responsibilities. Understand how to register your business as a company.

Conclusion

Starting a business while working a full-time job in India is possible, but it should be approached as a gradual transition rather than a quick escape from employment. Choose a practical business idea, validate it with real customers, manage your time carefully and keep your finances and professional responsibilities organized.

Your job can provide the financial foundation while your business grows. With patience, consistent effort and smart planning, a small side business can potentially develop into a sustainable full-time venture. Keep visiting Skill2Earn for business education.

The 3 Screen Exercise for Effective Goal Setting

Setting goals is crucial for personal and professional growth. However, the challenge often lies in making those goals specific, actionable, and meaningful. The "3 Screen Exercise" is a powerful technique that can help clarify your vision and set goals that resonate with your values and aspirations. Let us dive into what this exercise entails and how you can implement it in your own life.

What is the 3 Screen Exercise?

The 3 Screen Exercise is a visual and introspective method that prompts you to think deeply about your goals by considering three distinct "screens." Each screen represents a unique perspective or time limit that will help you frame your goals more effectively.

Screen 1: The Current Screen

Purpose: To understand your current situation.

Start by reflecting on where you are now. Consider the following questions:

  • What are my current strengths and weaknesses?
  • What have I achieved so far?
  • What obstacles am I facing?

Action Step: Write down a summary of your current life situation. This should include your achievements, challenges, and areas where you feel unfulfilled. Be honest and thorough—this is your baseline.

Screen 2: The Future Screen

Purpose: To envision your ideal future.

Now, shift your focus to where you want to be. Ask yourself:

  • What does my ideal life look like in 5 or 10 years?
  • What specific achievements would I like to have?
  • How do I want to feel daily?

Action Step: Create a vision board or a detailed written description of your future self. Include everything that matters to you—career goals, personal growth, relationships, and lifestyle. The more vivid the imagery, the better.

Screen 3: The Action Screen

Purpose: To create actionable steps toward your goals.

Finally, consider how you will bridge the gap between your current situation and your envisioned future. Reflect on these questions:

  • What specific goals do I need to set to reach my ideal future?
  • What are the first steps I can take to achieve these goals?
  • How will I measure my progress?

Action Step: Break down your goals into SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) objectives. Create an action plan that outlines clear steps you can take immediately and over the next few months to start moving toward your vision.

Putting It All Together

Once you have completed all three screens, take a moment to review your insights. This comprehensive approach allows you to:

  1. Identify Gaps: You can see where your current situation diverges from your ideal future.
  2. Clarify Priorities: Understanding what you genuinely want helps prioritize the goals that matter most.
  3. Create Accountability: By defining specific actions and metrics for success, you hold yourself accountable.

Tips for Success

  • Regularly Review Your Screens: Life is dynamic, and your goals may evolve. Revisit this exercise every few months to stay aligned with your changing aspirations.
  • Seek Feedback: Share your vision and action plans with a trusted friend or mentor. They can provide valuable insights and hold you accountable.
  • Stay Flexible: Life does not always go as planned. Be prepared to adapt your goals and actions as circumstances change.

Conclusion

The 3 Screen Exercise is a powerful tool for anyone looking to set meaningful and achievable goals. By reflecting on your current situation, envisioning your future, and creating actionable steps, you empower yourself to take control of your journey. So, start planning! Your goals are within reach. Let the 3 Screen Exercise guide you toward them!

Gratitude, Compassion and Simplicity – Homage to my Father!

Gratitude, Compassion and Simplicity are the three words which come to my mind today for the principals followed by my father in his life. He passed away on 11th Jan 2022 at the age of 86. On my birthday today, I am going to write how these things played very important role in his life and also like to express Gratitude towards the people who helped me throughout my life.

My father ‘Bhalchandra Deo’ (we used to call him ‘Nana’) served Government of India for 36 years in Telephone Department, which he did very meticulously and with lot of sincerity. Hard work was a part of his entire life so not to be mentioned separately.

More than his service, he was known as ‘Violinist’ and spent 70+ years in nurturing his hobby & passion. It was a difficult task to manage family life, full time government job and giving time for his passion. With no formal training, with minimum available resources he emerged as a Classical Violinist. Gradually he also went into accompanying many famous vocalists in the area of light classical. After being felicitated at multiple events and functions, people started referring to him as ‘Pandit’ (Guru). He taught hundreds of students in playing this ‘not so easy to play’ musical instrument. My sister is the lead student and now a professional violist.

In spite of being a violin guru at home, I never picked up this art and not an authority on this subject of music so I am not going to write more about it. Multiple articles were published in local newspapers about him. He was interviewed on All India Radio earlier and even recently. He was interviewed on Television channel also. His multiple programs are uploaded by his well-wishers on YouTube.

I will write about Compassion first, then Simplicity and lastly about the Gratitude…

Right from the days when he had a salary which was barely sufficient to manage a 4 member family, he was also compassionate about people who are struggling to survive. He used to pass on financial and other help to everyone who is needy. Even as children we were never told the details about the help he was doing but I know it mostly as I overheard these discussions at home. We were leaving in one room kitchen home for almost 20 years and then constructed one more room in the same home. Eventually he moved out of this tiny house after 25+ years. He or anyone from my family never thought the home was a hindrance in our upbringing! My mother was his ultimate supporter for 59 years of their togetherness!

Simplicity comes naturally with your financial condition and for someone like my father, it was a part of his life and was not related his financial condition. Moving from a small house to a one bedroom flat (apartment) was the biggest financial decision of his life and all other norms of simplicity remained same throughout his life. We also understood that punctuality, discipline, being organised and well-dressed has nothing to do with your financial status. He never used a Smart Phone or a Computer and used only bicycle and a small two-wheeler (moped) for few years. Later he stopped using any kind of vehicle and only used public transport.

Gratitude – First of all I would like to express gratitude towards known and unknown people who helped me and my family at various occasions. It includes Doctors, Medical staff, relatives, friends, colleagues, well-wishers, Nana’s students and many others. It is not easy to be ‘solo’ in life like a ‘solo traveller’. Also the relations which one built over his / her life are non-transferrable assets. They start and almost come to an end with that person itself.

Nana had a very deep feeling of gratitude in his life. He was never hospitalised till the age of 84 when he got a Heart Attack. Many people including family members helped him come out of this illness and he always wanted to show his gratitude towards all of them as it was first major illness of his life.

On 9th Jan 2022, he organised a ‘Gratitude Program’ to thank all those who helped him during this illness and recovery. This program kept on postponing (for good) because of covid19. While expressing gratitude towards everyone in this program, he collapsed from the chair with another massive heart attack. With CPR and revival process he came out from this Cardiac arrest once again for one day but finally breathed his last on 11th Jan in ICU in a hospital.

I do understand the importance of gratitude and thanking everyone who helped you but it should not be emotionally so stressful that it can take your life! We knew his feelings and were perfectly ok without that gratitude function also!

Overall he lived a very happy, healthy, satisfied long life and served Government as well as the Musical Community of India. He was a strong support to all family members and many others and we will definitely miss him.

This blog is the homage to him on my birthday!

How to start working as Digital Marketing Freelancer? - Part 1

Hi All

I have been asked this question multiple times in personal discussions, in the seminars and now through forums like Quora also.

Being a Digital Marketing Freelancer:

Part 1 of being a Digital Marketing Freelancer is to learn the Digital Marketing from an experienced trainer. The key parts of digital marketing are Social Media Marketing, Search Engine Marketing, Social Media Optimisation, Search Engine Optimisation, email marketing, content marketing and Mobile Marketing.

Part 2 is to understand how to find the work, how to collaborate with other freelancers and how to quote. You will need help of a graphic designer freelancer to be more efficient in your work.

Part 3 is actual discussions with client, finalising the order and completing the work. Understanding current market rates as per client expectations is a continuous process.

Part 4 is to get the payment and being in a contract with client. These can be monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly contracts.

Implementation:

For Part 1, you should know what to learn and where to learn! We also conduct online courses on digital marketing (which we used to conduct as classroom course earlier)

For Part 2, you can refer to another post on the same blog where the link is shared here:

Part 3 comes with actual experience but you can either do an internship or do a job for a while till you understand the commercials.

Part 4 is to ensure your payments and understand the contract terms

Where will you find the additional information?

Blogs, YouTube Channels, Forums and yes the forgotten Books ! Google Search can take you to all these resources including buying the best books on this topic :)

Is Personality Development still a good course to attend?

Personality Development is considered as an old school course ! Is it still a good course to understand some unknown aspects of our personality Development?

Personality Development can't be confused with Personal Image building, Career development, Individual Style development and so on. Personality Development is related to thoughts, feelings, behavior & self-confidence. The way an individual behaves is because of multiple factors and understanding of 'Self' is very important in Personality Development. Though we are not going to discuss psychology over here, psychology and your upbringing plays important  roles in your personality.

While developing the personality, what is required to discuss is fist understand the person, understand his or her career aspirations or life goals. Understand the person's aspirations and future plans. This has be an interactive discussion. Once the coach understands about the student, he / she should get into what is personality development and what is required by the student. There is no 'fit-for-all' formula in personality development coaching.

If as a coach, you understand that 'confidence development' is something which is most important for a particular student, you need to focus on that. If it's more about communication, you the student may need to join a separate class on communication. This understanding of gaps and trying to find out the right solutions is important. This coaching could not be the last coaching on this subject, in fact, it can be a start of a new more confident life for the student.

Students generally come and say that I want to develop my personality and expect to go out of the class as a different person. One needs to remember that this is not a gym, where you will look different after 3 months. This is a brain gym and the confidence lies within you and only you can change yourself. The inner changes are more important in personality development rather than buying a new pair of clothes and looking different. You can always look confident, but being confident and speaking confidently needs some work. You can transform your future with a better personality. Soft skills development can be a part of your overall personality development needs.

Personality development could be for college students, home makers, entrepreneurs, working professionals, anyone who wants to be happier in future life. An important learning step for Small Business owners to make your impression on the customers. There are additional courses to add more skills and enhance your personality but a basic course should definitely help.

Effective email communication

Email conversation can be categorised into different types:
  • Personal / friendly emails
  • Office email, reply to office emails from colleagues, co-workers (Small / Medium Businesses)
  • Professional emails / Corporate emails
  • Marketing emails
Each one of this type has it's own attributes, which we can see in below post:

In Personal / friendly emails; when you are writing an email, there will be a purpose in today's mobile-friendly world. That purpose need to be achieved and the reason for email should be known to your friend, family member or a neighbour. Though the tone can be always friendly and personal, you need to maintain the basic email writing style to convey the message properly & not to make it a chat conversation.

In Office emails, we are considering small, medium scale companies and Offices (except large multinational Organisations) where lot of daily work depends on emails. Here the tone can be semi-professional as most of the employees know each other well but the content of email is totally business specific, so that tone and seriousness need to be maintained. Proofreading is important here. Avoid over communication and under communication also. Use proper subject line.

It is not important which email client you use for sending and receiving emails but the format, content, effective subject line are the important parameters. In Corporate companies you will end-up using different email clients instead of webmail to keep the communication safe and secure.

In Professional emails, you may be talking to people whom you don't know or they are from your team but are located internationally and the tone always need to be professional. There are norms about Do's and Don'ts of professional email which need to be followed. Again, there are Organisation specific norms also about the Corporate emails which should be considered. There are norms about using the email headers (To, Cc, Bcc) also. Proofreading is most important here. Avoid over communication, nobody in Corporates like to read long emails. Use subject line effectively.

The Marketing emails are altogether a different game. In the World of Digital Marketing, you have to make people read your email and there could be follow-up emails also without making the readers frustrated. Marketing emails normally have different paths decided on your response and same / similar emails are not sent to all customers or probable customers. You need to plan these emails in advance. Proofreading and creating templates is important here. Use subject line of each template in a thoughtful way.
